A gate does something simple: it separates one space from another. At Versailles it also invites a question about access to power. Reaching the monarch was not merely a matter of distance. Rank, rules and courtly representation played a part. Notice how architecture can guide an approach, a passage and a view. The gates and courtyards of Versailles have different histories and should not be confused with one another. Our story therefore begins with a general question: who could pass, and what did passage mean? In the fictional chapter you become a messenger. The message leads from the threshold of the court to a place where even trees and distant views were given an order.
